Samsung Gear VR Setup Guide
The Samsung Gear VR takes more steps compared to the Google Cardboard but simpler to the likes of the HTC Vive. Get this virtual reality headset on, and let’s get started.
Let’s admit it. Virtual reality headsets are really cool to look at but can sometimes a pain to setup. If it’s your first time to do it, then here’s the ultimate guide to setup your new Samsung Gear VR easily. No more fuss, just direct to the point directions.
Just take these things in mind before using or buying your very own Gear VR. This VR headset is only compatible with Samsung Galaxy smartphones. This does not include smaller or mid-range Galaxy models. When playing virtual reality games, the Gear VR can get too hot to the touch so don’t be alarmed if that is the case.
Make sure to go to airplane mode and charge up your battery for an uninterrupted VR experience. Are you ready? Let’s go.
Unbox your package
Make sure all the necessary stuff are there after you unbox the new package of your Samsung Gear VR. Here’s a checklist you might want to check out.
- The Gear VR headset
- Velcro harness for holding the headset around your head (small and big one)
- Documentations (for safety precautions and user manual)
Put the harness on to the Gear VR
Untie the velcro harness included and put it on both sides of the headset. Make sure to use the right length for the size of your head and do some adjustments before finally fixing the velcro to the right position.
These will stretch out but make sure to give some slack as it may push into your head on longer use.
Download the Oculus App
Yes, the Samsung Gear VR is a scaled down version of the Oculus Rift and also using the software derived from the Rift. So in order to make the virtual reality headset work with your Galaxy smartphone, make sure to install the Oculus App. Sign in to your Samsung account or make one if you don’t have any yet.
Setup the app like languages and other personal info, then install some other necessary software to be used.
Install some Gear VR supported games and apps
From the Gear VR app, download and install some free and paid games that you want to try out. There are now a lot of supported games for the Samsung Gear VR so take your time to choose.
Install them before putting the smartphone inside the virtual reality headset.
Put the smartphone inside the Gear VR
The Gear VR have a front cover to protect the smartphone but what holds and secures it are the two arms that clips in the smartphone in place. Align the micro USB port to the micro USB plug from the headset. Slowly put down the phone. Lift the opposite side of the clip and secure the smartphone flat.
Check if it is snugly positioned inside the VR headset. Put back the front cover and you’re good to go.
